An Idiots Guide To American Football Rules

The purpose of the game of American Football is ultimately to move the ball towards the oppositions end zone.

The end zone is the scoring area on the field. It is situated between the end line and the goal line, and is bounded by the sidelines. There are two end zones at the opposite ends of the field. They are bordered on all sides by white lines which indicate their beginning and end points. They have orange sqare plylons placed at each of their four corners to make them visible.

Moving the ball towards the opposition end zone involves running with the ball until you are tackled, or throwing the ball as far and as accurate as you can down field in the oppositions half to a team-mate.

Downs unfortunately are fundamantal to the game, but are the most confusing part of the National Football League (NFL) rule book. The attacking team needs to move the ball forwards ten yards at a time, which is why the pitches are covered in yardage markings. They have four chances or downs to gain those ten yards. If the ball is advanced the full ten yards, a first down is earned with four more chances to go for a further ten yards. If the team on the offensive fails to progress within four downs, possession is lost.

The ball is kicked to the defending team on the fourth down.

Although most of the scoring happens close to the defending teams end zone, a touchdown (similar to rugby) can be scored from anywhere on the field and on any down.

The game is complicated, its movement is tricky and it involves eleven players, which is the total amount of players in an American football team. It is worth knowing the basics of the rules though if you want to start trying your luck on the betting side of the game. If you would like to know of a good site where you can place sporting bets, hockey bet and nfl betting odds are worth trying.
